Welcome to Mrs. Persons' First Grade Class

WELCOME TO FIRST GRADE

I am so excited to be your child’s teacher this year.I am ready for the new adventures that await us in first grade.  If you don’t know me already, my name is Mrs. Velvet Persons.  I am starting my 14th year of teaching here at Clymer Central School.  In the past, I have taught special education and 2nd grade.I have also taught American Sign Language.  You may also know me from coaching.I have coached volleyball for many years.  This will be my second year teaching 1st grade and I can’t wait!

I have two children of my own and a husband who also teaches.  My children are both in school themselves.  My son, Talon is entering 1st grade and my daughter, Tayden is going into 4th grade.  Being with my children is my favorite pastime.

I am excited to work with you and help your child become a lifelong learner.I hope I can help them love to learn and enjoy every day in 1st grade.

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

Reading is a huge emphasis for us this year.We will be learning many different strategies to help us become strong, confident readers.In order to achieve our goals we need your help too.Read with your child and help them with their sounds, using their tracking fingers, learning the basic sight words and much more.

Learning numbers and using numbers in math will be another emphasis this year. We will be using numbers daily and learning how to add and subtract.Students will be using a calendar, talking about patterns, shapes, time and money.

Daily:

Your student will bring home a folder that they will use throughout the school-year.The purpose of the folder is to both increase communication between home and school while also promoting student responsibility. One side of the folder has a “Home” label where students will put items that go home with them that day. The other side is for “School” where any correspondence from home can be tucked to come back to me (i.e. absence notes, permission slips, alternate pick-up schedules, etc.)

In addition to the folder, an agenda will also be coming home nightly and needs to be returned daily. This is where the students will mark their behavior of the day, place spelling words and more.

You can help by talking with your child about the folder/agenda and reminding them in the beginning of the year to both return the folder/agenda and check it nightly with them.

Other Important Items:

Transportation: All transportation changes must be in writing!We cannot take your child’s word!Notes can be sent in the morning of the change.In case of an emergency, call the office to notify us of a change.

News: A newsletter will be sent home at the beginning of each week. The newsletter will include reminders, important dates, topics we will be covering and classroom needs.

Conduct: Good behavior is expected and important to ensure a productive learning environment.Your child will mark their behavior in their agenda that will be colored based on their day.Please initial daily and review the rules if necessary.


Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple

Mrs. Persons’ & Mrs. Whalen’s Class will be using the “Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue & Purple" behavioral system to make the school day run smoothly.

Purple – When a student demonstrates exceptional behavior and follows all the classroom and school rules.It is when a student demonstrates a mature attitude and consistently works to do their best and more (without prompting).

Blue – When a student demonstrates good choices that go beyond the general rules of the classroom.

Green – When a student demonstrates appropriate behavior and follows the expectations of the classroom and school.

Yellow – This is a warning level. It is when a student begins to forget to follow the expectations of the classroom and school. It is when a student demonstrates a minor infraction.

Orange - This is when a student repeatedly demonstrates inappropriate behavior and repeatedly forgets to follow the expectations of the classroom and school. They will lose some/all of their recess.

Red – This is when a student continues to repeat the “orange” behavior or has made an extremely bad choice that should not be happening in the classroom or the school setting. They will be sent to the principal’s office for this kind of behavior.

***Students can always work their way back to green if they make mistakes throughout the day. It is important for them to recognize their mistakes and change it for the better.

**** The students will mark in their agendas on a daily basis what color they ended the day on.Please check for their color and initial next to their color indicating you saw how their day went.Thank you in helping make the school day a success for your child. ****
